3 Mistakes Parents Make Buying Kids Makeup and Nail Polish
Mistake Number 1: Not Checking the Ingredients
Have you ever picked up an all natural, non toxic, or safe kids product, such as nail polish or kids makeup, only to flip it over and spot propylene glycol, formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, or dioxins on the ingredients list? Or a brand with the word organic right there in the name, that actually only contains a handful of organic ingredients? This happens far more often than you would think.
So many products on the market claiming to be all natural, non toxic, or safe still list exactly those ingredients.
Why does this matter? Because chemicals and toxins are absorbed straight through your child's skin and into their bloodstream. That includes plastics, solvents, adhesives, and chemicals linked to irritation, hormonal disruption, and even cancer. My girls are the most precious thing in my life, and I am not willing to risk their health for anything.
Here is a simple tip: if you cannot find an ingredients list on a brand's website at all, that is usually a red flag.
Mistake Number 2: Chasing the Cheapest Option Instead of the Safest
Think that five dollar play makeup set looks like a great deal? Think again.
There is always a reason products are priced that low. Consider the quality of the ingredients, the working conditions of the people making them, and the impact on the environment. If you are paying five to ten dollars for a set of play makeup or nail polish, chances are you are paying for cheap, toxic ingredients, and the real cost shows up later in the effect on your child's health. You simply cannot put a price on that.
Mistake Number 3: Not Buying It At All
Have you ever reached into your handbag for your favourite forty dollar organic lipstick, only to turn around and find your child looking like mine?
My daughter Ivy is two and a half, and she absolutely loves my organic, natural makeup. So much so that two of my favourite Vapour lipsticks and my One Hundred Percent Pure black tea mascara have already met their demise. Ivy did not have her own little set at the time. Now she does.
These days her set lives right in my makeup cabinet, so while I am getting ready in the morning and she asks for blush, eyebrows, and lipstick, I dab a little pastel shimmery No Nasties Kids makeup blush on her cheeks along with some lip balm, and she runs off to show Daddy that she is a princess.
Do not make the mistake of skipping the purchase entirely, only to witness the slow demise of your own must have products.
