When Should Kids Start a Skin Care Routine?

Kids Skin Care

There is no single age where skin care for kids officially begins, but there are a few useful markers worth knowing.

From birth, the only real skin care most kids need is a gentle wash and plenty of moisturiser if their skin runs dry. Nothing fancy, nothing with active ingredients, just simple hydration.

By around age five or six, many kids are old enough to help wash their own face and start understanding why sunscreen matters. This is a good age to introduce a two step routine, cleanser and moisturiser, mostly to build the habit rather than to solve any particular skin issue.

Around age eight to ten, some kids start showing interest in taking care of their skin on their own, often copying a parent's routine. This is a great time to hand them their own gentle products and let them take some ownership, without introducing anything stronger than what they already use.

The tween years, roughly ten to twelve, are when skin can genuinely start to change, slightly oilier patches, the odd breakout. This is where a lot of parents feel pressure to reach for stronger products, but a simple, consistent routine is still almost always the right call rather than anything marketed for acne or ageing.

The short version: start simple, start early, and resist the pull toward more complicated products until skin actually needs them, which for most kids is later than marketing would have you believe.

If you are looking for gentle products at any of these stages, our skincare range was built specifically around kids' and tweens' changing skin, without any of the nasties found in adult ranges.

If your child is ready to start, the MEBEME Try It All Gentle Natural Tween Skincare Pack is a low commitment way to trial a simple routine before committing to full size products.
